Quoted paragraphs are from Helen Zille’s speech on poverty alleviation on 20th August 2010.
“Firstly, the state must do for people what they cannot be expected to do for themselves. The state must mitigate the effects of poverty through state intervention.”
This is condescending and is a major problem. People can look after themselves if they are given the opportunity to do so. But current building regulations force Africans (incl myself) to build using First World techniques when in fact Africans have African techniques that are very efficient and need almost no electricity or gas for heating and cooling!
“Secondly, the state must develop a policy framework that significantly expands people’s opportunities to escape poverty … the provision of an excellent public education system, accessible to all.”
The problem is that the state doesn’t understand what people need in the 21st Century and is still teaching people 20th Century principles. In an internet world, new techniques are required. The internet can allow many people to live at home, study at home, work from home, grow food at home, and become interdependent rather than dependent. Changing our thinking is our challenge.
“Thirdly, the state must implement a policy framework that is conducive to economic growth, encouraging investment and job creation.”
The problem here is the multitude of conflicting laws and laws which protect the establishment, ie big business, and which prevent competition. Laws that inhibit rather than promote growth. Laws that protect the rich at the expense of the poor and middle class. Laws that restrict growth and hurt the environment. We actually need fewer laws and not more laws!
In my small way, I am doing things to help the environment. Please visit http://www.mypowerstation.biz for ways for you to reduce your carbon footprint, reduce your cost of living and increase your free time.
If the government would promote these three goals, I would say ayoba (cool).
